The Story
Insurrection came from a place of frustration, grief, and helplessness. It was painted at a time when words no longer felt enough, when I was watching things unfold around me and struggling to make sense of them. Everything I believed in seemed to be cracking, and painting became the only way I knew how to work through those feelings.
Creating this piece was emotional, but also deeply therapeutic. It gave me a space to explore emotions that felt too big and complicated to put into words.
The painting is built on pages from faith-based books, representing the way Christian fundamentalism can be used to justify harmful behavior.
Layer by layer, the text is covered in black paint, symbolizing the hatred and intolerance that can grow from those beliefs when they are taken to extremes.
On the left, a woman screams in frustration. On the right, the Capitol stands as a reminder of the events that inspired the piece. The red and blue tones reflect both political division and the intensity of the emotions I was carrying at the time.
More than anything, this painting is a snapshot of a moment when I felt overwhelmed and heartbroken. It reflects my attempt to process that experience and turn those feelings into something visible.
